Library Leads Way in State Public Library Mentorships

Committed to furthering advancements in library services on a statewide level, the Oceanside Public Library is engaged in mentoring libraries doing visionary community work. In 2022, the Library received a second year of funding through the California State Library for an Early Learning and Community Information Hub as well as a paid teen internship program called Teens Work. As part of this second year, Oceanside librarians are serving as mentors to other libraries initiating similar programs. In addition, in 2023, the Library will receive a second year of funding for Stay & Play, an initiative of the California State Library that supports programming for informal caregivers and the children in their care.

Early Learning and Community Information Hub:

  • Oceanside librarians are mentoring libraries on developing or enhancing early learning hubs tailored to local community needs to provide support as they develop their role as community spaces and connect young children and families with other programs that support literacy, learning, and health and wellness.

Teens Work:

  • Oceanside Teen Librarians are mentoring paid teen interns to cultivate essential soft skills and personal work habits that will help with resiliency, job skills and community goals. Local Librarians are also serving as mentors to other libraries working to implement similar paid teen intern programs that support workforce development and community growth.

Stay & Play

  • Stay & Play includes programming designed specifically for informal caregivers, helping them learn, develop relationships, and build connections to their library and community resources.Oceanside Librarians will serve as Stay & Play mentors, actively working to support other library systems as they develop new or expand existing programs.
