Native American Heritage Online Programs

We acknowledge that the Oceanside Public Library and the lands on which we live are the traditional territory of the Payómkawichum people, also known as Luiseño; of the La Jolla, Pala, Pauma, Pechanga, Rincon and Soboba bands. In honor of Native American Heritage and the original peoples of this land, the public is invited to two online programs this November:

Medicinal Plant Presentation by Ami Admire on Friday, November 6 at 11:00 am. The Payómkawichum and most surrounding San Diego County tribes believe plants, trees, and animals are the First People. This presentation is an introduction to some of those original people, now called medicinal plants. Their medicine and gifts to the people are as valuable as they have been since time immemorial. Please join us to meet them as you may not have met them before and in their own language. Q and A to follow.

Ami Admire, Director of the Rincon Youth Storytellers, is Payómkawichum (formerly known as Luiseño) from the Rincon Indian Reservation. With 20 years teaching experience, medicinal plants and local customs are the heart of Ami’s programming. She is a 2019 recipient of the National Indian Health Board’s Local Impact Award. The lens through which Ami and her team view their work is the reduction of trauma and healing for the young people in our shared communities.

The Acorn Maiden Story Presentation by Rincon Youth Storytellers on Saturday, November 14 at 1:00 pm. A San Diego County Kumeyaay story. Three Acorn Maidens from the Spirit World will be sent to Earth by the Creator to become food for the people. Join the Acorn Maidens as they weave 'hats' to get ready for their journey! Artwork and Narration created and presented by the Rincon Youth Storytellers. Q and A to follow.

The Rincon Youth Storytellers (RYS) are Native youth, grades 4 - HS, who have made a commitment to the healing of their communities through the preservation of language and culture. Travelling throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties, the RYS share the games, stories, and songs of their ancestors; providing assemblies and presentations for schools, conferences, and local agencies.
